a recent, disturbing turn of events

To begin this story, I need to go back to the beginning of my relationship with my Hubs. The very first night we spent together, in fact. Even though he was kind of young, he was extremely thoughtful. He got us a room in a local hotel. That's when I found out that he snored. He didn't just snore, he SNORED. It was worse when he was over tired, which he was that night.

The only way I got any sleep that first night was during his quiet periods. I managed to get accustomed to his snoring, eventually. To this day, I have no pity whatsoever for these women who complain about their mates snoring. If I can get used to it, so can anyone else. I even found it rather soothing. In fact, the nights that he would fall asleep in his recliner, I would wake up after a few hours, because he wasn't there, snoring. I'd go out to the living room and make him come to bed.

So, for nearly twenty five years, I've slept well with this. The only problem he's had with me, is that I used to grind my teeth in my sleep. Until recently, that was the only complaint he had.

Apparently, I've begun to snore, myself. It's too funny, because Hubs complains about it. And he tells me that he knows that he snores, and doesn't know how I've put up with it for so long. That he is amazed that I never killed him in his sleep.

Just this morning, he asked me if I had taken a certain medication before bed last night. I told him no, I hadn't. I asked him if I had snored a lot last night, and he said no, that I hadn't snored at all! So perhaps we have found the cause. I just won't take that medication before bed any more. At least, on the nights he has to sleep well, and get up early for work.

And that's what is disturbing, at least to me. I have no desire to snore. It's funny, but I've never heard myself snore. I've been sort of awake, some of the times he says I've been snoring, and I haven't heard it.

Keep him on his toes

Lately, it's been difficult to find TV programs on that I want to watch. You wouldn't think it would be so hard, what with the hundreds of channels available these days.  I've discovered the channel ID, Investigation Discovery. It's been there a long time, but I hadn't watched it.

I've been filling my evenings with programs about spouses killing each other, and the like. My beloved Hubs wanders through, stopping to smoke a cigar, and watches with me for a little while. The other evening, he commented about my programming choices. He asks me if I've got any plans, if I'm gathering ideas.

A few nights later, he sees I'm still watching these programs, and he comments that he's starting to get nervous. So I decide to have some fun. Last night, I went into the bedroom, where he was watching his show, and as I walked to his side of the bed, I counted the steps as I took them, softly, to myself.  His eyes got big, and he asked me what I was doing. I just laughed and said "Nothing..."

Now, he's really getting nervous! I reminded him last night of the old proverb, happy wife, happy life. I just love pulling his chain. I must clear up a few things, I wouldn't want to give you the wrong impression! I am very happy with my Hubs. He's been even nicer to me since the last kid moved out.

The main reason I'm watching ID, and all these true life murder stories, is that even with all the channels, it feels like I've seen it all. There's nothing on that catches my attention any more. Even all the bad science fiction, vampire, and zombie movies? I've seen them!

The other night, Hubs poked his head out of the bedroom and announced "There's a zombie movie on! In this one, it's tree sap!" I don't think he was surprised when I announced that I had seen it already.

So these real life murder mysteries are just something I haven't seen yet. The first ones I watched were all husbands killing their wives. None of them got away with it, which made me feel better. I made sure I let my Hubs know about it, just in case he had any thoughts...

One last explanation. My Hubs and I do spend evening time together, but he isn't comfortable in the living room. Maybe after we get new furniture? But he is much more comfortable in the bedroom, so he goes in there after a while so he can relax. We don't, in general, enjoy the same kinds of shows anyway.

Necessary Adjustments

It's been a long day, and I'm tired, but I thought I'd better get today's post out of the way.  It has been four days since Hubs started working days. He is temporarily working Monday through Friday, 8 to 5, for training. I must say that I am pleasantly surprised that I'm adjusting kind of quickly.

I get up in the morning, and if I don't have to sit for the Cherub, I can have my coffee and watch my morning programs. At 11:15, I leave to go sit for Miss Malia. I am usually home by 3:40 or so. That is a good time to do last night's supper dishes, I'm finding. I get them done, and then I can go watch TV, and wait for Hubs to get home.

Right now, I'm having conflicting feelings, because he's home in the evenings. For all these years, he's been gone in the evenings half of the week, and that was my alone time. I got used to being alone during the day, since he was sleeping, and therefore not around that much. But now my alone time is only during the day, and he's here  every  evening. This is the hard part for me. I am used to watching whatever I want on TV, and eating dinner when I want, and even whatever I want to eat.

Now I'm having to make dinner every night. So far, it's not been too bad, I'll  just have to wait and see how this whole thing plays out. Like right now, he's in the bedroom watching Thursday Night Football. So I can still watch what I want to.

I have always told him that I sleep better when he's here. Now I will get to sleep well every night!

Settling In

This being only the second day that Hubs is actually working during the day, we haven't truly settled in to the new routine yet. Especially since both mornings, I had to get up before he did. My early morning charge, the Cherub, needed me yesterday and today this week.

So the rest of this week will be interesting, in the mornings. Hubs' alarm will be going off at 6:05. I get to stay in bed, if I can manage to get back to sleep. Somehow, I doubt I will be able to accompish that. But I will do my best.

I made us a nice dinner last night, our favorite meat on a stick, and garlic mashed potatoes. Yum. I'm finding it convenient that Hubs is gone during the day, now I can wash dishes and vaccuum all I want to (not that I want to...). It's difficult to do those things while someone is sleeping, and you can't make any noise.

Progress on the next baby blanket is coming along. I just started on the second skein this morning. The shower for this mom is in less than two weeks now. I'd better get a move on. It shouldn't take that long at all, and I will do my best to get it done and laundered before the shower day.

Preparing for Stitch n Bitch

Today, I very nearly finished using all the yarn from conjoined twin #1 on twin #2. I made myself stop crocheting, and I sewed all then ends in. Then I crocheted a little more. I had plenty of time, since my charge napped for three whole hours today.

I am saving my crocheting for tomorrow's Stitch n Bitch. After which, I will be traveling to a craft store to see if they have restocked my color of cotton yarn. Hopefully, they will have done so, so I can buy one more skein. That's all I need, one more skein.

Even if that purchase doesn't work out, I will be making a trip to our local Bed, Bath and Beyond store, for king size fleece sheets. It's getting chilly enough at night these days for them. We sleep on flannel the other three seasons. Really. Even in the Summer. I need to buy new ones, because I can't find the bottom sheet from last years set. I have no idea where it is! The pillow cases I have, and the top sheet I have been using all along. But the bottom sheet has disappeared.

Those of you who are regular readers may remember an early post, about Hubs and myself using separate covers on our bed. It was my defense mechanism against freezing to death. My beloved Hubs was, and still is, if given the opportunity, a terrible covers hog.

I will keep you updated on the sheets, and the blanket too. Wish me luck at the craft store!

Marriage Advice and a Random Story

I was not able to blog yesterday, I was busy all day, then spent the evening with Hubs. He tends to frown on my using the laptop when he's around. He has actually told me that he's sorry he ever got it for me! The nerve! This is only the second best present he's ever given me, in twenty two (nearly twenty three!) years of happily wedded bliss!

The best gift ever was my Jeep, of course, Christmas of 2003, I think it was. I remember because we paid it off in December of 2008, seven months before we were laid off. One less car payment! Then we were able to pay off his truck when we re-financed our mortgage. No car payments!

Anyway, that's not what I wanted to talk about today. I have a few little stories I thought of that I wanted to share. The first one is about marriage...

Sometimes I am asked for advice by those newly married, or contemplating wedded bliss...  Marriage is a complicated thing. It certainly isn't easy, but it can be downright impossible if anyone entering into it harbors totally unreal expectations. To make it simple - Every marriage is different. You and your spouse make the rules for your individual marriage. What works for you will not work for everyone. For example: I learned very early in my relationship with my beloved that he is a total blanket hog. I would wake up in the middle of the night totally uncovered, and freezing, while he was completely rolled up in all the bed covers. In order to survive, I went to the closet and got out another blanket. We have had separate covers ever since! It works for us.

Your relationship is not like anyone elses. Not your parents, not your siblings, not even like a previous relationship you may have been in! And for Goddess's sake don't make up rules without telling your spouse! He has to know the rules too! I am being gender specific here because in my experience, it's the females who have the weird ideas and fantasies of marriage, not the men. In this one way, they may be the more practical gender for once, and not being their usual "just stupid boys".

Which segues nicely into another story! My friends daughter was very upset after Karate class one day, one of her fellow students, a boy, had been picking on her during class. I said to her, "Mellie, he's just a stupid boy!" to which she replied, "Thank you!!" in a loud voice. That has been our mantra ever since. Any time any male person does something dumb, or objectionable, we just look at each other and say, "He's just a stupid boy!" Even Hubs has been called that, and he laughs. It kind of fits all male persons, at one time or another, because sometimes they act like they never grow up!

Well that's all I have for today. I have to go clean now. Enjoy your Labor Day!!
