A Morning of Galavanting

This morning, friend Bonny and I went gallivanting. My mother-in-law introduced me to that term, and it fits pretty well. She used to go out gallivanting all the time.

So this morning, Bonny and I went out, to go to Hobby Lobby because she needed more yarn. Then we went to Michaels, where I found a longer (36") size 11 needle. Points for me! I also bought a new size N crochet hook. I can't find any of my old ones.

After that, we ran some other errands that she had to do. It's nice to get out once in a while. I got home just before noon, when the new Knit and Crochet Now program was on. Perfect timing!

So I've been knitting today, working on Ozzy's new bed. I changed over to the longer, bigger needles. I hope to get some photos tomorrow. I've also been working on more secret projects. Let's call them Christmas or Festivus presents. I wish I could show them to you, but they are surprises.

And just so you know, I broke out Sara's sweater yesterday, and did a few rounds on that too. I stopped because I think the body might be long enough, but I didn't feel like measuring it.

I also enjoyed the beautiful day we had today! It was so sunny and warm, despite the chance of thunder storms. We didn't get any. YAY! I hope it was nice where you are!

No progress to report

That's right, there's no progress on Sara's sweater to report. To be brutally honest, my mind is on something else right now. But I will pick it up again soon, I think. I know she was excited at the prospect of having a mom-made sweater!

I was so tired today, I actually laid down to take a nap this afternoon. I could have slept, but I was concerned that I would sleep for too long, so I didn't let myself fall asleep. I finally came out, and decided to watch the latest episode of Lost Girl on demand, I missed it Monday night. I fell asleep before it was over. And just as the program started, Hubs called me, to let me know he was on his way home from work.

So maybe I was right not to nap. But now I'm extremely tired, so I'll probably go to bed early tonight.

Knitting update

I found the time to work on Sara's sweater today, after yesterdays unending headache. It's coming along swimmingly, progress is being made. Slowly but surely!

I have a definite length measurement that I got from Sara when she tried it on. I need 17 inches from the bottom of the armhole. I am going to add one inch for the curling up. I hope that's enough. Since the two rows of purling done on my sweater didn't work out too well, I won't be doing that on Sara's.

The idea of the purling was to stop the curling. The curl was supposed to go over the purling, but it didn't work out that way. Oh well. It's my sweater, and I am OK with it.  I want my beautiful daughter to be proud of the very first sweater I've made for her. Over the years, I've crocheted many afghans, but this is my first knitted sweater for her. Let's keep our fingers crossed that she likes it, and will wear it!

At last, knitting time

Finally, about 5 pm last evening, I picked up my knitting and started in. I think I went around a couple of times. Then Hubs came home, and I put it down. But I took it with me to child-sit this morning, and worked on it some more. So I'm getting there.

Today, I may knit some more. When I took the sweater for Sara to try on, she remarked that by the time I would finally finish it, it will be well into Summer, when she wouldn't be able to wear it. Oh well, that's the way things work out sometimes.

I am now having my coffee, and watching Graham Norton on BBCA. Love that show, he always makes me laugh. With just one more thought, I will take my leave for the day.

I heard about Justin Beiber at the Anne Frank house. That stupid boy needs to be reminded that the whole world DOES NOT revolve around him. She would soooo NOT be a "Belieber". Someone please kick him in the ass for me.

Knitting progress report

I've been working on Sara's sweater, and I've gotten a lot done. I've completed the two waist decrease rows, and after a few more rounds, I will do the increase rows.

And that's just about it. I'm knitting all morning, and part of the afternoon. Even some into the evenings.

Jason and Becky found some roller blades on clearance somewhere, and have been rolling around. We went outside and took some photos of them, but I will have to get their approval before posting any. I'll give them points for not falling, even once!

Adventures in parenthood

This is my first post in two days. Truly, nothing was going on on Friday. Nothing to report, except progress on the current sweater. Which is a good thing.

Yesterday, however, we drove out to Andover, Mass. to watch our son compete in a karate tournament. It dragged on forever. We had Jason and Becky with us, and I felt bad that it was so boring. This was their very first tournament to watch. When finally the Master Divisions were called, we all perked up. His being a 4th degree black belt makes him a Master now. He didn't do breaking, but did forms and sparring. His form was excellent, but he didn't place.

His first two fights were excellent, you can see he really enjoys doing that. But during his third fight (in a row, with only a 30 second break in between, I must add) I saw something I hoped to never see. He got a kick straight to the jaw, and went down like a sack of potatoes. My heart stopped. As soon as he hit the floor, he got up and wanted to continue the fight. But he was swaying, and unsteady on his feet.

They made him sit down, and he got examined by someone. I'm not sure if that person had medical training, or lots of fighting experience.  Either way, he recovered, and wanted to continue. The Judges stopped the fight, wouldn't let him fight any more, and gave him first place. They gave second to the man who kicked him, but wouldn't let that guy compete in the Grand Championships either.

I have to say, no matter that your kids are all grown up, that sight can still stop a mom's heart. He did have a whopper of a headache, and didn't want to drive home last night. He and Julie stayed at a hotel and headed home after breakfast.

I must say, that in all his years of learning karate and competing in tournaments, he has been really lucky. He broke a finger when he was an orange belt, and as a red belt, got his chest wall bruised. But he has never been seriously hurt. Knock on wood.

Even though I brought my knitting with me, I never broke it out during the tournament. There were like 10 rings going all at once, and there was a lot to see. There were people there from all over the country, and even the world! I saw teams from Texas, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and South Carolina. There were teams in attendance from Canada, Wales, and even South Africa!! Amazing.

It was very crowded in there, so we spent some time in the hotel lobby just hanging out until the crowd thinned down a little. As the underbelts finished, they would leave, and make more room. So the theory goes. It was still corowded when we finally went in, but we found a place to sit, against the wall, and when things got going we stood on the chairs to see better. Alot of people were doing that.

All in all, Jason and Becky enjoyed themselves. They learned alot, and would like to see another tournament, maybe a little closer to home.

possible road trip?

It's another day in paradise. I worked on Sara's sweater yesterday, got another couple of inches done. I plan on doing the same today. But today, Becky wants to re-learn how to crochet. She'll come over and we can work together.

Hey, I have exciting news. I may have talked Hubs into taking me to WEBS.  Keep your fingers crossed. I told him that we could get the yarn for his sweater there. A road trip could be fun. It'll sure beat the hell out of the nightmare that was the Bow Hunter Superstore grand opening celebration. PPPFFFTTTT. I have never let him forget that one. He owes me.

And HAPPY SPRING! (a day late)

Photo updates

This morning, I was the only one for Stitch n Bitch. Jan had to work, Bonny had a sinus issue, Kim's Cherub is ill, and Cheryl had meetings. At first I was just going to go home, but I decided to go to Cranberry's for a cuppa coffee and a scone. I got a few rows of knitting done on Sara's sweater while I was there, which prompted me to take some photos once I got home.

The progress on the sweater is not very visible, but it's joined now, and the raglans are almost done. After they're done, the sleeve stitches get put on scrap yarn, and the body gets completed. Here is how it looks right now:

As I said, not much to look at. On the other hand, my cowl is all done, and very warm. I wore it today. I have to find an actual person to model it, so you can see how it looks when worn. Maybe later, I'll visit the karate school and see if one of my son's female students will volunteer to get her photo taken. Anyway, I took a photo of it on the floor, and here it is:

I am quite pleased with how it came out, as there is no annoying interruption of color where the second skein was spit spliced with the first. It worked out perfectly!  This hasn't been bocked yet, and I may not block it. I'm not entirely sure that blocking would improve anything. If I get bored next week, perhaps I'll be inspired to block it.

P.S. I love spit splicing! No pesky ends to weave in!

apparently I'm in a slump

I've hit a low spot. There's nothing going on right now in my life. I'm still knitting, and I've made progress on Sara's sweater, yesterday I joined it together at the bottom of the V-neck.

And my awesome cowl is almost done, just another couple of inches to go. I've tried it on, and it's so warm, I can't wait for it to be done. I guess I'm becoming boring. I can't even think of any stories to tell you. Let's all hope this doesn't last too long!!
